松本次郎开始整顿监狱，处死了一批囚犯，幸好有严正方暗中保护，李正白等人才逃脱一劫。此时，马宇飞率领手下寻找着伍云召的下落，而万里涯也漫山遍野地搜寻，伍云召看出其中些许端倪，于是暗中挑动，竟然让他们两伙人火拼起来。就在李正白思考下一步如何是好的时候，一直在后面注意他的老鬼头主动上前询问李正白是不是想过卧虎岭。李正白心头一凛，问他是何人，老鬼头自说是沙舵爷的师爷。李正白表示沙陀爷已死，怕卧虎岭难以逾越，老鬼头冷笑一声，表示自己既然找他来，就有办法。前提是要离开监狱。李正白将信将疑，老鬼头在地上煞有介事地画了张卧虎岭的地图，旋即毁掉。李正白见状，表示自己可以想办法把老鬼头带出去。次日，众囚犯被押上了军车离开监狱，众人都以为是要上刑场，当下心中俱是一惊，老鬼头更是按耐不住，竟想脱逃。幸好李正白看破，点出日本人一定另有企图。事实上，日本人是让众囚犯给日军修一条盘山公路。众人方才把悬着的心放了下来。众人被分组干活，各怀心事。晚上，众囚犯回到监狱，发现日本人围坐在一起，庆祝天长节。
