出川抗战的孟天成团驻防山西黎城县东的东阳关，阻击从太原南下之敌。全团官兵身着单衣短裤在冰天雪地里奋力抵抗，无奈武器装备悬殊太大，死伤累累。日军炮火将城墙轰塌一个缺口，日军士兵向城内猛冲。孟天成抽出大刀率领尚有战斗力的数百名官兵齐齐冲入敌群，大刀劈砍，刺刀突刺，一场惊天地泣鬼神的肉搏战将日军杀得鬼哭狼嚎，尸横遍地。

前线川军的战况传回自流井，尤其是夏楷的《井潮》报详细报道了孟天成团东阳关一役之惨烈战况，以及山西黎城致四川人民的感谢公函，民众们再次沸腾起来，于是声势浩大的募捐行动在自流井展开了。

自流井的盐工是社会最底层，苦寒无比。但他们推出代表找到孟天运，要求工会出面组织盐工也为前线捐款。孟天运感动之下为他们四处奔走游说，终使他们的抗战热情感动了很多盐商，纷纷提前支付盐工工钱。盐工们整整捐出了可供购买两架战斗机的款额，于是，命名为“盐工号”和“盐船号”的两架战斗机从此翱翔在祖国的蓝天上，与日寇血搏长空。

川军补充兵员招募处排起了长长的、自愿报名参军的队伍，天下滋味墩子师李老二索性也当了自愿壮丁，说大酒楼的墩子师也不消干了，跟部队当伙夫，守着儿子!

燕伯卿拦住了队伍将唯一的儿子燕家成捐出来，让他去杀敌立功。
