日军对自流井进行的这次大轰炸空前惨烈曹永茂堂损失颇大，十几处井灶被毁。当曹子才得知孟五德堂仅枧管被炸断一截，再没一处井灶挨了炸弹，包括偌大的孟府也躲过轰炸安然无恙，认定自流井有J细给日本飞机发信号，曹子才找到孟天宝，两人决定借助当下人们的仇日情绪，煽动民众，借他人之手宰杀孟五德堂。正在此时，孟天慕领着军警也进了孟府。遂令军警将孟天许带走，押入市党部羁押待审。宛如眼睁睁看着自己两个养子相煎，大受刺激，晕倒在地，场面一片混乱。孟天运背起宛如一路飞跑至自流井仁爱医院请医生抢救。

孟天慕对躺在医院病床上的宛如说，把三哥孟天许羁押待审，是在救他，也是在救孟五德堂。

夏青城在曹子才的鼓噪下，以盐务局的名义将孟五德堂所有井灶枧号指为敌特物资，统统查封罚没，准备以拍卖的方式予以瓜分。曹大欢为就天许东奔西走，几次三番登门求见孟天慕就是不睬。曹大欢急了，请了几名专事哭丧的妇女，每日不间断地在市党部门前嚎啕大哭，鸣冤不平;自己则坐在椅子上亲自督阵，言道，反正家也让人毁了，要脸还有何用?
